In the meantime, I sought an impression from the Jefferson County Lawyer as to regardless of whether I have the authority to implement a regional moratorium on household evictions — and I’ve been informed I do not have the lawful authority to do so.

As president of the U.S. Convention of Mayors, I have has joined mayors from across the nation in calling for an extension to this moratorium, and I urge Louisville people to simply call their U.S. Senators and Congressman about the need to extend the federal moratorium — at 202-224-3121.

I also continue being fully commited to accomplishing what we can locally to preserve men and women in their households. Currently, Louisville Metro Government has allocated $21.2 million in federal CARES (Coronavirus Help, Aid, & Economic Security) Act income towards eviction prevention aid.

The town founded the Eviction Avoidance for Homes System to guide persons by way of the Business office of Resilience and Community Services, together with a program that lets landlords of subsidized units to apply for support on behalf of their tenants, the Landlord Tenant Rental Help Program, by way of the Office of Housing.

In addition, the Office environment of Housing has partnered with the court docket method and Legal Assist Society on the Eviction Diversion Pilot Program, which functions as a backstop for eviction as conditions enter the court method. 

Louisville Metro also reallocated $3 million from the Landlord Tenant Rental Assistance Program for external company agreements with the Coalition for the Homeless and the Association of Neighborhood Ministries to administer eviction prevention systems.

Going forward, my group and I will carry on to look for approaches to support these having difficulties with the many destructive impacts of COVID-19.
